Representing our Artist

We want our artist to be the same person in our music video as on our album cover. Our artist is the producer of our dance track and we are breaking the stereotypes of actually showing the producer in the music video where most producers and DJs would never actually feature in their own video.

We want to show him in a way that he doesn’t take himself too seriously and he is very light hearted which we hope will make him very likeable because he doesn’t have a strong opinion on anything but is a genuine guy who just wants to have fun doing everyday things. Although we are showing him as a geek and a nerd but the same person in our music video we want that to be his personnel, it’s obvious that this person that he has made isn’t the real him and he’s making up a character to be for the video and the promotion of his album.

We decided this because we wanted him to be different, not seen as fake as if he is pretending to be someone he is not but someone that is obviously putting on a character to tell the story of a person who just wants to be in a place that he loves. Researching into other peoples star image when they first start off as artists in the music industry prove that a lot of other people have changed just so that people will be drawn to them. This isn’t what we wanted to do with our artist but make him a person that will make the music industry not so harsh on those that just want to make music because they enjoy it and not for the attention. (Although you do need fans and people to buy your records for the money but do it for others to make them feel the same message the artist is trying to get across.)

Categories of Music Videos

Narrative Music Video – A song with a narrative based music video the song includes a narrative story of the lyrics/ words being acted out in some way. This style relies on imagery to produce a story for the audience to follow and some narrative videos include clips from films that the song has been featured in. This seems to be used a lot in slower songs, and often tend to be love stories. Videos such as Katy Perry – TGIF and Disclosure – You & Me.

Concept Music Video – Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept and are usually unusual and obscure, even surreal for the audience. This unusual content is an attraction to many consumers, which draws them in. Concept videos usually are combined with one of the other two styles as the market demands for greater accessibly rather than the somewhat niche that is pure concept art. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at what or who is on the screen. Ok Go – This Too Shall Pass is a good example of a concept video.

Although a lot of videos these days mix the three different videos together, some do performance videos with narrative videos and others mix concept with narrative if they want to make their music videos different to the ones that are already out there.

Music Video History

One of the earliest examples of a music video was Bessie Smith – St Louis Blues in 1929. It was shown in theatres in 1932. Tony Bennett’s song – Stanger in paradise was filmed in Hyde Park, London and was played across UK and US television stations in 1956. Bennett claimed that his music video was the very first. This was the first example of using music videos on TV  and this lead onto creating channels like MTV and Top of the Pops. The 1970’s saw the music video change with more emphasis on just the artist singing like Jackson Five – I Want You Back.

Music videos are made to promote the song an artist or band has produced. There are three main types of music video, performance, narrative and concept. Music videos are also for showing off the band/artists talents, if they can act, dance or play an instrument. It also gives the audience a better understanding of the song if the music video has a concept or a narrative.

Music videos these days are mostly shown on YouTube and TV, anyone can access music videos anywhere and any time. The artists website, vevo and vimeo are other examples of places you can view music videos, it has changed drastically from when they first were created.
