Finalised Digipak

This is my final digipak for Fin Lee’s All I Think About EP. From what I had developed before I added in an extra panel and created what the actual CD would look like. I decided to put a photo in the top left hand corner with a cheesy quote about loving life and how you should appreciate everything and be happy. I wanted to do this because it allows the audience to connect more with our artist in a friendly, relatable way which is quite nice that some artists don’t do with their fans/listeners.

I put the CD as a nice blue which was the same colour as the background of the Instagram panel. I wanted to use this colour because it connotes the sea, a ordinary boy and just a happy colour in general. It’s bright and it’s pleasing to look at, it catches your eye and relates to the music video of being happy. I used the same white typography and pattern that is on the front of the CD cover and on the website of the zigzag. I used this because I wanted the zigzag to be Fin Lee’s thing where if you saw it you’d instantly think of Fin.

I also created the spines and put ‘Fin Lee – All I Think About EP’ down the side of each to give it that added extra detail. I also connected the same image of the back of the EP as the sides so that it connects easily.

On the back of the EP I added three different logos, MTA Records, Mercury Records (Who can twin with MTA records on certain artists and is from the Universal Music Group) and a random logo that I decided to use for the copyright. I also researched different copyright statements that are at the bottom of albums to see what I need to write so it was correct.

Developing our Digipaks

I began planning out what I was going to put in each of my panels when I had finished doing the front and back cover. Although I had already roughly planned what I wanted to put in them I wanted to see what would look good and make it all look connected, from the EP to the music video to the website.

On one of the extra panels I decided to place a little flyer selling the different tour dates he is doing over the year that will encourage people to buy a ticket if they listen to his music. I have also put a website link directing to the one I created to have a look at over dates and venues he is performing at.

With the extra panel I decided to create a page that looked like polaroid photos from our music video, using a blue background so it still connects with the idea of the beach and summer. I decided to do it in a polaroid layout because many teenagers these days have gone retro and back to polaroids because they think it’s cool. This will connect the artist and the audience and encourage them to go and look at his instagram that has a link to it.

I also edited all the photos that I used for the EP because the screenshots that I took from the video all had a different sort of filter/colour/effect, so I edited all the photos so it had the same filter over each picture to make it look more professional and visually pleasing.

I yet have to create another panel and the actual CD which I will continue to use the same edits, typography and style of the EP.

Starting our Digipaks

This is what I have created so far for our first lesson on our digipak’s, I wanted the EP to look similar to the website and have the same traits as the video so that they all link so that the audience can connect them all together and make ‘Fin Lee’ a professional artist.

For the front cover I have taken a screen grab from our music video of Fin Lee looking over the sea which is a nice shot because as he is a British producer having something that is homey for him will relate to those who like in the UK. We don’t have the luxury of having palm trees outside and golden sunny sand, Brighton is the closest thing to that for our artist. I wanted him to be down to earth all the time and always goes back to his roots so that people in the UK can understand him.

The template we were given to help develop our digipak’s really helped me to think about size and the spine when it comes to creating our own and even a hard copy if we come to it. Once I had created the front and used the same typography including the font and colour from the website, I also took the same zig zag animation from the website that is the logo to his own name that tops it all off.

Planning Our Digipaks

Here is a plan/layout of what I want to do with my digipak/EP. I have decided to put inside the CD two pages that allow the audience to get to know our artist better which includes pictures from the music video that are unseen and also photos from his website. There is also going to be some lyrics from songs that are up and coming and brand new in 2015, and quotes of inspiration from his friends, family and himself to give something a little bit more personal and unique to the album.

I want to connect our artist to the audience as much as I can so that they feel as if they can relate to his music or his background story. They can read things about him and he’s not shut out so that the audience don’t know anything about him. I want the audience to know a lot about him so he comes across more appealing and likeable to the music world.

Choosing A Record Label

The record label I have chosen for our artist is MTA Records which is an independent record label that was founded by Chase & Status in 2008, a very popular and well-known house/drum and bass duo from the UK.

The different genres of the record label are drum and bass, rap, grime, soul, dupstep, deep house and UK garage in which our artist Fin Lee falls into deep house nicely. This record label isn’t too out of our artist’s league as it is made by a British duo who want to help other British dance acts to set off their careers. People such as Kove, Nero, Ben Pearce, Moko and Dimension are among those who have been signed to Chase and Status’ label.

I have picked this one because I think he would fit in nicely and the fact that it’s independant means that Fin Lee will have more of a chance to be himself rather than being sculpted if it was a part of Sony Music or Universals record labels. You have more of a chance to use your own music, do whatever you want with your videos and have fun with it at the same time.
