Finalised Digipak

Screen Shot 2015-02-19 at 11.57.22

This is my final digipak for Fin Lee’s All I Think About EP. From what I had developed before I added in an extra panel and created what the actual CD would look like. I decided to put a photo in the top left hand corner with a cheesy quote about loving life and how you should appreciate everything and be happy. I wanted to do this because it allows the audience to connect more with our artist in a friendly, relatable way which is quite nice that some artists don’t do with their fans/listeners.

I put the CD as a nice blue which was the same colour as the background of the Instagram panel. I wanted to use this colour because it connotes the sea, a ordinary boy and just a happy colour in general. It’s bright and it’s pleasing to look at, it catches your eye and relates to the music video of being happy. I used the same white typography and pattern that is on the front of the CD cover and on the website of the zigzag. I used this because I wanted the zigzag to be Fin Lee’s thing where if you saw it you’d instantly think of Fin.

I also created the spines and put ‘Fin Lee – All I Think About EP’ down the side of each to give it that added extra detail. I also connected the same image of the back of the EP as the sides so that it connects easily.

On the back of the EP I added three different logos, MTA Records, Mercury Records (Who can twin with MTA records on certain artists and is from the Universal Music Group) and a random logo that I decided to use for the copyright. I also researched different copyright statements that are at the bottom of albums to see what I need to write so it was correct.

Developing our Digipaks

I began planning out what I was going to put in each of my panels when I had finished doing the front and back cover. Although I had already roughly planned what I wanted to put in them I wanted to see what would look good and make it all look connected, from the EP to the music video to the website.

On one of the extra panels I decided to place a little flyer selling the different tour dates he is doing over the year that will encourage people to buy a ticket if they listen to his music. I have also put a website link directing to the one I created to have a look at over dates and venues he is performing at.

With the extra panel I decided to create a page that looked like polaroid photos from our music video, using a blue background so it still connects with the idea of the beach and summer. I decided to do it in a polaroid layout because many teenagers these days have gone retro and back to polaroids because they think it’s cool. This will connect the artist and the audience and encourage them to go and look at his instagram that has a link to it.

I also edited all the photos that I used for the EP because the screenshots that I took from the video all had a different sort of filter/colour/effect, so I edited all the photos so it had the same filter over each picture to make it look more professional and visually pleasing.

I yet have to create another panel and the actual CD which I will continue to use the same edits, typography and style of the EP.

Starting our Digipaks

This is what I have created so far for our first lesson on our digipak’s, I wanted the EP to look similar to the website and have the same traits as the video so that they all link so that the audience can connect them all together and make ‘Fin Lee’ a professional artist.

For the front cover I have taken a screen grab from our music video of Fin Lee looking over the sea which is a nice shot because as he is a British producer having something that is homey for him will relate to those who like in the UK. We don’t have the luxury of having palm trees outside and golden sunny sand, Brighton is the closest thing to that for our artist. I wanted him to be down to earth all the time and always goes back to his roots so that people in the UK can understand him.

The template we were given to help develop our digipak’s really helped me to think about size and the spine when it comes to creating our own and even a hard copy if we come to it. Once I had created the front and used the same typography including the font and colour from the website, I also took the same zig zag animation from the website that is the logo to his own name that tops it all off.

Final Website

Final Website

This is the main home page on Fin Lee’s website, I changed the background from the palm trees from California to an image of Brighton because it relates to the ‘All I Think About’ Video and it also connects with his home town. In the right hand corner I have five different social media buttons that link to different pages, I chose these ones because they would be the ones a young, quirky and fun guy would have. We also created instagram and soundcloud profiles for him to make it seem more real.

We have the ‘All I Think About’ music video right in the middle which is embedded from YouTube, I chose to keep this in the same place because it’s good for promotion for whoever views the website because it’ll be the first thing they see. I have ‘Fin Lee’ in white typography that is bold and I took this from Sub Focus’ website because I thought it worked well and was good for catching peoples eyes.

On the side is a button directing you to iTunes and a caption that says ‘Buy All I Think About Now on iTunes’ which is also good for showing that if they liked the video and the track they can instantly buy it on iTunes. Below the video are three tabs which direct to different pages on the website About Fin Lee, Photographs and Live Photos. All have a picture or a piece of text to support the tab.

Then below that is a contact and subscribe bar for those who wish to get in contact with Fin Lee’s agent and allows you to sign up to his page to get updates and news sent to them when it happens. This allows the audience to get closer and feel closer with the artist and see what they are up to.

On the Photographs page this is what comes up, a load of pictures from the ‘All I Think About Video’ and other shots from behind the scenes that audience members haven’t seen before. This allows the audience to see the real Fin Lee and not the on screen Fin Lee which is a nice connection.

There are multiple photos and at the bottom there is a tab that says ‘Show More’ where I have preloaded other photos so it seems as if he has been really busy and there are a lot of pictures to look at. All range from the classroom to Brighton which is a nice contrast because they can see the action of the shoots.

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 13.07.26

This is the Live Dates page where I have carefully selected places and events that an artist like Fin Lee would perform at. These days there are a lot of concerts that involve a load of different artists and have about a half hour set each rather than touring or headlining their own like Culture Clash and Annie Mac and Andy C’s All Nighters. I chose 02 Academy around the country and small venues like Brighton Concorde and the Apollo so it seems more realistic than the London 02 or Wembley Arena.

I picked a load of places from around the UK so that it makes more sense that he is doing loads of different small concerts in different places rather than all being in just one town like London. I have put the dates clearly next to the name of the show and the place it is being held at, above that it either says Sold Out or Buy Tickets. I have connected the Buy Tickets tab to Ticket Masters Clubs and Dance page to make it seem more realistic. I have also spread them out so that they aren’t all happening at once and throughout 4 months.

At the end of each date I have placed a locator icon with Locate above it where I have linked them all to a google maps page of where each venue is incase people don’t know or want to know how far away it is from them.

First Draft of Website

Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 12.02.09

This is my first draft of my website, I wanted to get a rough idea of what I wanted to do with it before I made it perfect for my artist and the target audience.

The background I picked I know doesn’t exactly go with Fin Lee’s music video and style as he is from England and you don’t get palm trees in England, but I wanted to have a background of a landscape or something natural for the mean time before I decide what I want.

I like that the name is bold and white and the typography is plain but catches your eye, I wanted it like this because I thought it looked quite cool in comparison to how ‘uncool’ Fin Lee is in his music video. I embedded the video of his music video just below his name so people are inclined to click on it and watch whilst looking at the rest of the homepage.

I made three sub pages at the bottom which includes photographs, about and live dates all with pictures or information. I will make these links to other pages when I continue making my site and keep it matching the theme with the same typography and colour scheme.

Our Final Music Video

Here is the link to our finalised music video – [x]

I am very pleased with how our music video turned out, I had had doubts since planning that it wouldn’t look the way we wanted it to but I am so pleased and has turned out better than expected.

I think that it tells the narrative well and allows the audience to let go and just watch and hopefully make them feel happy and have a good day. Everyone goes through that idea of just wanting to run away and do what they love instead of something they don’t like their job or school (in context). I think that we allowed the audience to connect to the character well because he is someone whom you can’t not love because he is fun and bubbly and only wants to have a good time.

From comments and feedback that we have been given I know that we can say that our music video is giving out the right message and just wants people to have fun. Everything that we originally planned for the video including messages, narrative and how the audience feel after consuming the video.

Reflecting on Target Audience

After finalising our video looking back at my target audience I know that everything I wrote down was correct and still matches for the music video that made. It shows escapism which most 15-21 males want to do to get away from student and working life. It still matches up with the sort of dance music artists that they like because our song is very similar to the tracks that those artists have released. They all like going out and having fun which is what exactly Harvey does in the video, it appeals to them because it makes them want to have fun and to go out.

During planning and the construction of our video I did have a feeling that our target audience would change as it wouldn’t apply to those specific people but when I realised that it all matched up with exactly what their ethos as a target group would be.

Editing and Reflection on Our Video

We have almost come to the end of editing our video and we have made a lot of changes and not just cutting shots to others. As a group we decided that the sea shots made Brighton look tacky and disgusting and that no one would want to go there because of how bad the water and the sky looked in the shots.Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 11.54.02

We decided as a group to change this and try and make the sea and the sky look brighter and more appealing. We tried to make the shot look bluer but only made it look colder and unnatural. We then tried going red but made the stones look like sand and that it was desert like which looked extremely over edited. We wanted something that was quite subtle and looked natural so that the audience wouldn’t even know we adjusted the colours.Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 11.53.49

We then tried mixing green and red together to see what sort of colour that gave off, only dragging the colour correctors away from the middle slightly so we knew it would still look normal. We liked the colour that it gave the sea, it didn’t look so murky and more of a bright green/washed out blue. It also gave the sky a pinky/red effect like the sun had just about set and made the clouds feel warm.

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 11.53.09

At the end of the video where Harvey is dancing in the sea the song at this point is more calming because the beat has already dropped numerous times you can tell that the song is coming to an end. We decided to put in some slow motion to match the music and it gave it a nice and relaxing feel, along with the new colours on the shot it looked fun to watch and quite mesmerising .

He swishes the water in which little droplets come towards the camera slowly which give it a nice effect as the water falls gently.

By doing this I think that this is more visually pleasing towards the audience and I liked how as a group we came to a mutual decision on how we were going to colour correct it and what looked right for that specific shot.

Editing Techniques

For editing our music video we all took turns in using our own skills to edit and make the video the way that we visualised it. I edited the part in the rough cut where Harvey is eating the ice cream disgustingly towards the camera and I cut in between the clips to make them jump slightly to see other shots that we took. As I was putting these shots in before Harvey looking out onto the beach I had to make sure that later on in the music the beat drops when he starts to dance as I had moved everything along with the music.

Screen Shot 2014-11-06 at 12.23.39 Screen Shot 2014-11-06 at 12.23.46

I looked through the other editing Charlie and Sophia had done in between the eating ice cream scene I did and the looking over Brighton scene they edited I wanted to make sure that the music matched with the visuals and that Harvey was dancing when the beat kicked in. I had to shorten other shots to make this possible so that it looked good and the rhythm matched, I tried my best in not making it too obvious that I had changed their editing but I did a good job of cutting scenes down and still being able to make them work.
