Starting our Digipaks

This is what I have created so far for our first lesson on our digipak’s, I wanted the EP to look similar to the website and have the same traits as the video so that they all link so that the audience can connect them all together and make ‘Fin Lee’ a professional artist.

For the front cover I have taken a screen grab from our music video of Fin Lee looking over the sea which is a nice shot because as he is a British producer having something that is homey for him will relate to those who like in the UK. We don’t have the luxury of having palm trees outside and golden sunny sand, Brighton is the closest thing to that for our artist. I wanted him to be down to earth all the time and always goes back to his roots so that people in the UK can understand him.

The template we were given to help develop our digipak’s really helped me to think about size and the spine when it comes to creating our own and even a hard copy if we come to it. Once I had created the front and used the same typography including the font and colour from the website, I also took the same zig zag animation from the website that is the logo to his own name that tops it all off.

Planning Our Digipaks

Here is a plan/layout of what I want to do with my digipak/EP. I have decided to put inside the CD two pages that allow the audience to get to know our artist better which includes pictures from the music video that are unseen and also photos from his website. There is also going to be some lyrics from songs that are up and coming and brand new in 2015, and quotes of inspiration from his friends, family and himself to give something a little bit more personal and unique to the album.

I want to connect our artist to the audience as much as I can so that they feel as if they can relate to his music or his background story. They can read things about him and he’s not shut out so that the audience don’t know anything about him. I want the audience to know a lot about him so he comes across more appealing and likeable to the music world.

Reflecting on Target Audience

After finalising our video looking back at my target audience I know that everything I wrote down was correct and still matches for the music video that made. It shows escapism which most 15-21 males want to do to get away from student and working life. It still matches up with the sort of dance music artists that they like because our song is very similar to the tracks that those artists have released. They all like going out and having fun which is what exactly Harvey does in the video, it appeals to them because it makes them want to have fun and to go out.

During planning and the construction of our video I did have a feeling that our target audience would change as it wouldn’t apply to those specific people but when I realised that it all matched up with exactly what their ethos as a target group would be.

Test Shot Analysis

We tested the camera and some of the shots that we have intended to use in our final music video. This really helped us as we knew what test shots to use and which ones not to use, how to angle the camera and how long specific scenes should take matching it up with the music.

Problems that we encountered was that we didn’t have the main actor that we are going to use in our final music video. It didn’t give us a sense of what he was going to do rather than Sophia and I acting it out as if we were the main characters. We also didn’t have any lights that we wanted to use so it didn’t give us the desired effect of good lighting and how to highlight different sort of objects. No costume or props were used such as the scooter or having a geeky looking person might not have given as good effect when not using any of these.

We took a few hours testing shots and using the camera, we used a variety of different shots in different angles and different proxemics. Our time management was very good, we didn’t just focus on one thing for too long we spread it out for a specific amount of time. We took about 20 minutes before we even started shooting discussing what we were going to do and what sort of things we were going to try out so we could tell our ideas to each other.

We got most of the shots that we wanted, the shots that we used and will want to continue to use in our final music video is over the shoulder of work, close up on key board, two shot of bored student and happy student and medium shot of working in a classroom.

We worked well as a group, as we didn’t have the actors we needed Sophia and I were the actors for Charlie who is the camera man to do test shots on us. We all took direction from each other well and all pitched in different ideas to try out and experiment with. Sophia directed both of us well mainly but as Charlie was behind the camera he could see what looked good and what felt right on the shot.

From these shots we will test them out on the actual actor and see how well they look on him, we’ll use the specific ones we found visually affective and use them throughout the video as we felt that they worked extremely well. As we have done this exercise we know which shots work and which ones don’t so when we come to filming we can get straight on and know what we are doing with intention.screen-shot-2014-10-16-at-12-13-27

Schedule for Filming

Monday 13th of October: As we break up from school on the 17th of October we thought it would be best if we would do it as soon as possible during the half term incase things don’t turn out the way we wanted them too. We decided to do some test shots in school on the 13th of October to give us some practice again before going out and filming straight away, we want to see how they look and what sort of shots look best for the music. This day is also a good opportunity to talk about what we plan to do in detail so we know exactly what we are doing in the half term.

Monday 20th Of October: Filming in Brighton on the 20th of October and to make a day out of it as it is isn’t in London and we will have to know exactly what we are doing and that we can’t waste time as it quite far away.

Tuesday 21st of October: We then are going to film the next day on the 21st but in school and taking the test shots we did on the 13th and make the shots even better, it will give us time to make it perfect and get the camera shots we want.

Thursday 23rd of October: We then decided to leave a break in the week and go and film on the 23rd of October to go over anything we feel we haven’t films or anything we haven’t perfected. It will give us time to go back to Brighton if we need to or to go back to school if we haven’t got all the footage we need.  We also have to think about the weather and if that it’s raining on the 20th then we will have to reschedule and think about going on the 23rd.
